5k Race 2015

SPAN’s Annual Turkey Trot 2015

5k Race at Kinder Park, Severna Park

SPAN Turkey Trot 1On a, sunny but chilly morning, over 170 runners and walkers of all ages gathered for SPAN’s annual Turkey Trot 5k at Kinder Farm Park. As always, the park’s trails provided beautiful scenery for this wonderful family event to support SPAN. Rebecca Fishburne of Fit4: Whole Life Fitness led runners through a brief warm-up before the 9:00am start and throughout the day everyone was treated to snacks and drinks, provided by Christopher’s Restaurant in Crofton.

Michele Antal and her son Mark were among the first-time race participants. “We love this park,” Michele said. “We walk it together all the time. We just couldn’t pass up the opportunity — it’s for such a great cause.”

Friends Alex Lecouras and Andrew Rutkauskas ran together. Both are 10-year-old fifth-graders at Folger McKinsey Elementary, where they are active in a variety of year-round sports. This was their first time running a 5K. “It was fun,” Rutkauskas said of the race.

CSSi, a clinical trial patient recruitment and enrollment firm based in Glen Burnie, supported SPAN with a team of about 15 runners, including dogs Chloe and Pepper. “We’ve done this a few times,” said Chris Trizna, company president. “We’re always looking to support local community causes.” Erika Macy of Hanover and Pasadena resident Jenny Thompson ran with the CSSi team. “I thought it was great,” Thompson said. “The rolling hills were a little challenging, but not so much that you couldn’t do it if you weren’t a trained runner. It was a beautiful course.”

A signature event for SPAN, the Turkey Trot sponsors included PNC Bank, Pilates on the Bay, Christopher’s Restaurant (Crofton), Fit4, SunTrust Mortgage, Long & Foster (Severna Park), The Bank of Glen Burnie, Fleet Feet (Severna Park), FastSigns, Friendship Creative Printing, Chick-fil-A (Severna Park), FroYo House (Severna Park and Arnold) and Volunteers for SPAN.

Sandi Crawford and Michelle Bowers co-chaired the fundraiser said that the event is important because it raises awareness for SPAN and emphasizes the importance of supporting a local charity. “It provides a wonderful fun and family-oriented event each year,” Bower said. “We have really great support from the community and the volunteers. Volunteers for SPAN helped coordinate the event and was a GOLD SPONSOR.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support!!!

Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi Raises $5,000 to Help Our Neighbors in Need

Nancy GreerEach year, Nancy and Billy Greer, owners of Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi, have a Silent Auction to benefit SPAN. The Greers start collecting for the silent auction as soon as the previous one is over, and each year their goal is to collect more donations than the previous year.  Nancy says, “Each year we hope to raise more money/food for SPAN than the year before , so we’ve got our work cut out for us this December.” This year’s party was amazing with tables and tables filled with auction items, demonstrations, and of course so much delicious food.  Many thanks to Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi and the local businesses and individuals who donated to and attended Jing Ying Institute’s Silent Auction for SPAN. Together, they raised $5,000 and over 500 pounds of non-perishables for SPAN’s food pantry.
