SPAN’s friends and family gathered on the front lawn to celebrate the nonprofit’s 25th anniversary and ribbon cutting to officially open the new addition to the SPAN office. But they arrived with more than giant scissors and smiles; they brought memories accrued during 25 years of helping our neighbors.
SPAN opened its doors to help families through critical or emergency situations such as utility turn-offs, court-ordered evictions, prescription/medical needs and food. SPAN was formed because of the concern on the part of the ministers in the Severna Park area with regard to the growing demand for emergency help, the need to identify the people seeking help, and a process to help those people in a dignified and expeditious manner and although SPAN has expanded and grown over the years, we still remain dedicated to our mission:
To provide food and/or financial assistance to individuals and families to help them through a critical or emergency situation… and promoting and encouraging self-help efforts….
For twenty-five years, SPAN has continued to help our neighbors; but we haven’t done it alone. We had the help of our friends- through donations, fund raisers, sponsorships, and food drives. Because of you, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE EVERYDAY; A DIFFERENCE TODAY THAT WILL LAST FOR MANY TOMORROWS
On February 25, 2015, the Association for Severna Park Improvement, Renewal and Enhancement (ASPIRE) recognized Judy Harris for given generously of her time in serving the community. For almost two decades Judy has had the vision of helping our neighbors in need. She has been serving on SPAN’s Board of Directors, representing Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, and numerous committees, for over 16 years. Judy leads by example, and without expectation of any recognition, she is always ready to go above and beyond to make our community a better place to live. Judy Harris’ endless dedication enables SPAN to make a difference every day – a difference today that will last for many tomorrows.
Former SPAN Board of Directors Member and Board Secretary Debbie Tocknell, was also a recipient of the ASPIRE Award for her service to the community.
On Saturday, Dec. 15 the Severna Park Green Hornets, Boys 8/9 Basketball League (180 players) invite parents, family and friends to bring food, gift and monetary donations to the gym before their son’s basketball game. The Capital Gazette published a nice story about their generosity.
