SPAN Board Members
Ted, a member of Woods Church, took on the role of SPAN president in 2016. He has been a volunteer with SPAN since 2014, and still works in the pantry two days a week, in addition to his duties as president.
Ted lives in Severna Park with his wife, Jill, an optometrist, and they have one adult son, Eric.
Ted is retired after many years in the auto industry, and likes to golf, ski, kayak, and bike in his spare time.
Trish Davis has been a volunteer interviewer at SPAN since 2001, and has served as Vice President of the SPAN Board of Directors for since 2014. Since moving to Severna Park in 1982 she has been an active volunteer in the community, working in her sons’ schools and on the board of Olde Severna Park Community Association, serving as treasurer and president. Trish is married with two grown sons and is a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Trish graduated from Western Maryland College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work in 1977. She worked as a juvenile probation officer and addictions counselor before obtaining a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland in 1982. After obtaining her MSW she worked primarily in medical social work, including several hospitals and for the Maryland SIDS Project at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In 1992 she left social work and began working in bookkeeping, facilities management and event planning for the computer software company that she and her husband own. She retired from that work in 2011 and now enjoys frequent travel.
After leaving social work Trish wanted to volunteer in a community-based organization, and felt that SPAN was providing much needed services to families in need. Over the years she has seen SPAN grow and develop into an integral part of the Severna Park community. She has greatly enjoyed working with the staff and dedicated volunteers at SPAN over the years she has been volunteering there.
Karen became involved in SPAN in 2005, when she was asked to serve as a Board Alternate Representative for her church, Severna Park United Methodist Church. Soon afterward, she began working in the food pantry one day a week. Karen has also helped with several fundraisers – the Golf Tournament, the 5K Fun Run/Walk, a notecard fund raiser, and the 20th and 25th Anniversary Celebrations. She has also served as the Review Committee Chair. Karen has lived in Severna Park since 1999, is married, and has two grown daughters. She is a Teacher Aide at SPUMC Nursery School.
John Howland joined Our Shepherd Lutheran Church shortly after moving to Severna Park in 2010. He was always curious about the organization in the old rectory behind the church, and one day stopped in to see what SPAN was all about. That led to a volunteer position in the pantry. Eventually, John was able to increase his involvement and became SPAN Treasurer in the summer of 2015.
John grew up in Topeka, Kansas. He attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, New York, and after graduation he reported to Navy Flight Training where he began his Naval career. John spent 24 years in the Navy flying F/A-18s from various aircraft carriers all over the world. However, if you ask him, the highlight of his career was convincing the Texas woman he was dating to marry him and join him on the adventure. He and Magi have been together ever since, and have three children, Sarah, Nicolas and Ruby.
John and Magi moved many times with the Navy and lived in many exotic locations. It has (kind of) slowed down over the past few years as John was assigned to several staff tours in the DC area. John retired from the Navy in 2016, and the family decided to make Severna Park their permanent home. John continues to fly as an airline pilot for Southwest Airlines.
